A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is either badly decayed, infected, has a large filling, fracture or has experienced trauma. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

Some signs that a root canal is needed

  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Pain when chewing or applying pressure
  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth
  • Swelling and/or tenderness around the surrounding gums
  • A reoccurring pimple on the gums

Upon completion of root canal treatment, a core build-up and crown are then placed over top of the entire tooth for protection and strength.
